Frequently Asked Questions
What is upcycling?
Remember the old tire swing at grandma's? That's upcycling. Or your roommate's quilt made out of her ratty t-shirts? That's upcycling too. Upcycling is a way to give old or discarded materials a new purpose.
There’s a positive environmental impact to upcycling. Materials used to make an upcycled item are rescued from the landfill. Less trash creates more treasure for you.
Who is Hipcycle?
Hipcycle is the leading online store for upcycled goods. Our products are attractive, durable and priced fairly, compared to similar mainstream items. We search for the best in upcycled products from some of the world’s most creative small businesses and offer them all in one place.
Are you aware your logo is talking?
Yep, and the Hipcycle logo definitely has something to say. The image in the word bubble is a silhouette of an upcycled composting barrel, significant in two ways:
- It’s made from upcycled materials, and
- Composting is good for the earth.
A sustainable win-win in our books.
Our logo is fun and a little bit quirky, just like us. While we are serious about providing great products you will love, we also believe in the genius of Gene Wilder (as Willy Wonka) when he warbled, “A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.”
Who makes your products?
Magical tree-dwelling elves.
Just kidding. We work with dozens of Product Partners – mostly small businesses that specialize in producing upcycled items. The items they create are made from reclaimed materials.
Hipcycle products come from the USA and all over the world. Overcrowded landfills are a global problem, and all of our Product Partners are doing their part to make the world a little greener, one upcycled item at a time.
Why aren’t all your products made in the USA?
Waste is a global problem. We support any enterprise that removes waste from the environment while paying workers fairly to do it. Sometimes these are American businesses and sometimes they’re not. Our mission is to provide the best upcycled product available, from any location.
Still curious about a product’s origin? Each product’s page on our website lists where it’s made.
I ordered two of the same bowl and they look slightly different.
You’ve discovered the beauty of upcycled products - no piece is identical to another. While two of the same product will indeed be similar, they will never be identical, giving each item one-of-a-kind flair.
How do you package your products?
Our top priority is to ensure your purchases arrive safe and sound. We make an effort to be as green as possible by re-using packaging in our warehouse that we get from local businesses. That may include things like bubble-wrap and Styrofoam peanuts that are not recyclable. If you get these in your shipment, continue the cycle and reuse them.
Do you offer gift wrapping?
Surprise! We do. Gift wrapping is available for many items (it’s listed on the product page) for an extra $8.00. Just select this option at checkout. Our giftwrap is upcycled too! For example, we’ve wrapped packages in sewing patterns topped with a paper flower made from a magazine.
How much does it cost to ship my order?
Most orders over $49 ship for free! This includes USA orders shipped via regular ground package delivery services like UPS, FedEx, or the US Post Office (i.e. non-freight orders). For orders $49 and under, or for express delivery, your shipping cost will depend on the weight, method and arrival time you choose.
For international orders, click the international checkout button on the shopping cart page, and you will instantly see a quote that covers shipping costs and any applicable tariffs and duties.
How is furniture shipped?
Furniture ships by freight with flat rates that are based on total cost. You can get all the details here.
What if you no longer have what I want in stock?
We apologize. Some items are just too awesome and sell quickly. We typically only list available items on our site, but mistakes happen and we may list something that’s out of stock. In the event you’ve ordered an out of stock item, we will e-mail you the anticipated ship date. Can’t wait? We can suggest alternate products or cancel your order too.
I want to buy a lot of one item for my wedding/corporate event. Can I do that?
Of course! We'd love to help you. We've worked with lots of our customers to assist with place settings and table centerpieces for weddings, or for for items for corporate events. Pretty much all of our products are handmade in small batches, so contact us at email@example.com and we'll let you know what kind of lead time we would need. Heck, we may even be able to offer you a discount. Just let us know what you are interested in, how many you need, and by when you would need them. Looking for product ideas for your next event? We've got you covered here.
When will my purchase arrive?
Orders are usually shipped the next business day and sent according to your chosen level of service. For example, if you order on a Tuesday, your shipment is usually packed and shipped on Wednesday via the mode you selected.
Some items are shipped directly from our Product Partners and may take longer to arrive. Delivery times for these products are indicated on each product page.
How do I suggest an item for you to carry?
Our Suggest a Product page has all the answers.
Do you have an affiliate program?
Yes. Complete and submit our affiliate application. Once approved, you will have access to Hipcycle banner ads and trackable links to promote on your site.
Can I return products?
Absolutely. We want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase. Please see our Return/Refund Policy for details.
Do you offer directions on how to make upcycled products?
Our blog is an amazing resource for upcycling tutorials, if we say so ourselves.
